Texting has become a crazy phenomenon in the past few years. Commercials poke fun at the communication gap between teens and their parents as they try to understand the language of ‘OMG’ and ‘BFF’. It all came even more into focus for me recently. In a local restaurant there was a TV tuned to one of the ESPN channels and it was flashing the news of George Steinbrenner’s death. I brought it up and one of the guys with us said “Oh yeah, I got a text about that earlier. Crazy, huh?” Ok, so he wasn’t overly stricken with grief but what really struck me was that he’d gotten this tidbit of sports news delivered right to his phone... and he remembered it. Imagine what people would do with information about a team they are connected to and care about—your team—if you had information streaming via text right to their phones. Using text messaging as an information delivery system and/or as a marketing system to your fans is a great way to connect to your team, parents, alumni, donors and fans.
